The Arts
Dashur as a Writer, Painter, Storyteller and Weaver of Human Experience
Ibikunle Dashur is a renaissance spirit whose artistic vision captures the intricate beauty of human existence through multiple creative mediums. As a painter, writer, and master storyteller, he possesses an extraordinary ability to illuminate the complex interlacing of human emotions, relationships, and experiences that define our shared journey. His work resonates with profound authenticity, drawing readers and viewers into intimate conversations with their own hearts while celebrating the universal threads that connect us all.
Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. Ibikunle’s creative soul was ignited early amidst the rich cultural landscape of his homeland. His literary journey was profoundly influenced by the towering voices of global literature. The Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka taught him that words could challenge and transform society, while Chinua Achebe showed him how stories could bridge worlds and preserve cultural wisdom. Maya Angelou’s fearless exploration of human resilience inspired him to write with vulnerability and courage, while other literary masters demonstrated how art could serve as both mirror and lamp — reflecting truth while illuminating new possibilities. These influences coalesced to create Dashur’s distinctive voice: one that speaks with the wisdom of experience, the curiosity of a scholar, and the heart of a true storyteller.
Ibikunle’s academic journey reflects his multifaceted nature and interdisciplinary intellectual curiosities. Other influences include renowned writers and poets such as T. S. Eliot, Mary Oliver, Simone Weil, and later, Niyi Osundare, Leke Alder, and so on, whose works ignited his passion for crafting verses that resonate with the heart and soul.
He maintains his interdisciplinary focus, especially, on the interactions of human and the environment, urban and rural sociology, abstract painting and writing too, Though, his early years’ journey provided a good foundation for understanding the power of words and the importance of storytelling through his keen interest in the arts. While the need to follow in his father’s footsteps persuaded him to develop a career in construction and engineering, this did not prevent him from nurturing his passion for art. Mostly collected by private collectors, he shares his paintings and drawings with the world, showing them in Museums, Art Galleries and private viewings. He is involved in the literary community, participating in book readings, workshops, and events that celebrate art writing, visual art, photography, poetry and creative art in general. He is a Member of the Society for Art Collection, Nigeria, a Director at AIFA Reading Society, and a Member of the Governing Council of the Akashi Leadership Initiative, Nigeria, a Member of Society of Authors, UK, and a Member of the Advisory Board of Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA).
With expertise spanning Civil Engineering, Construction Law, Project Management, Human Resources Management and Business Administration, he brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective to his creative work. This diverse educational background doesn’t merely inform his art — it transforms it. His engineering mind brings structural precision to his narratives, his legal training sharpens his ability to examine human motivations from multiple angles, and his business acumen provides insight into the complex dynamics that drive human relationships and societal change. This intersection of technical expertise and artistic sensibility creates work that is both emotionally resonant and intellectually rigorous, really. Read any of his books, you will understand.
Throughout his professional career in construction, Ibikunle has maintained an unwavering dedication to his artistic calling. By day, he orchestrates complex building projects, deals with contracts administration and project management practices, understanding how substructures support soaring superstructures and fundamentals of construction regulations. By evening, he applies these same principles to his creative work — building stories and paintings with careful attention to foundation, structure, and the delicate balance required to create something both beautiful and enduring. This dual existence has enriched both his professional and artistic endeavors, proving that creativity and commerce need NOT be opposing forces but can instead inform and elevate each other.
His creative spirit extends far beyond writing into a rich constellation of pursuits that continuously fuel his artistic vision. As an accomplished painter, whose works are mostly privately sourced and collected by some of the big collectors and private entities, he captures on canvas the same emotional depth and human complexity that characterizes his written work. Personally, his own art collection reflects a discerning eye for pieces that speak to the human condition, while his love of music provides rhythm and melody to his written words. Nature walks offer him quiet spaces for reflection and inspiration, cycling provides the physical movement that often unlocks creative insights, and his extensive travels have exposed him to diverse cultures, perspectives, and stories that continuously expand his understanding of human experience.
These varied interests are not mere hobbies but essential components of his creative ecosystem. Each walk, in nature, might yield a metaphor that transforms a poem, each musical experience could inspire the rhythm of a new story, and each journey to a new place, adds layers to his understanding of how people love, struggle, hope, and dream across different cultures and circumstances.
Dr. Dashur’s commitment to nurturing the creative arts extends well beyond his individual practice. He serves as one of the leading voices in Nigeria’s literary and arts communities, holding membership and leadership positions in various organizations dedicated to promoting creative expression and supporting emerging artists. His involvement reflects a deep understanding that art thrives in community, that individual talent flourishes when supported by collective vision and shared resources.
Ibikunle Dashur represents one of the best of contemporary artists — rooted in tradition yet forward-looking, technically skilled yet emotionally generous, individually accomplished yet community-minded. His work stands as testament to the power of art to illuminate human experience, bridge differences, and create connections that transcend boundaries of culture, geography, and circumstance. Through paint and pen, charcoal, pencil and pastel, canvas and page, he continues to explore and celebrate the magnificent complexity of being human in an ever-changing world.
